Sparring lovers, a hero in Battle, a tormented and abandoned queen, a bevy of witches, and a boisterous crowd of sailors— Purcell’s miniature opera Dido and Aeneas has all the ingredients of a fine drama! This charming miniature was written for Josiah Priestly’s School in 1695. The acclaimed chamber choir Schola Cantorum joins with members of Providence Baroque in presenting this ancient tale of lost love. Mezzo Soprano Sophie Michaux is featured as the tortured Queen Dido.

A consummate singing actor, Sophie Michaux is known for her committed portrayals of a wide variety of demanding roles on the opera stage.
Sophie recently appeared as Alcina in Caccini’s La Liberation di Ruggiero (Haymarket Opera), Olofernes in Scarlatti’s La Giuditta (Haymarket Opera ), and Ceres in Boston Early Music Festival’s production of Lalande’s Les Fontaines de Versailles. She has sung as Mezzo soloist in Rameau’s Orphée (Les Délices), DeFalla’s El Amor Brujo (Lowell Chamber Orchestra), Mozart’s Coronation Mass (Dartmouth College Handel Society), Handel’s Dixit Domino (Upper Valley Baroque), Messiah (New England Classical Singers), Beethoven’s Mass in C (Chorus of Westerly),and many others.
