In Renaissance England a cultivated person was expected to be musically literate, often both vocally and instrumentally. Well established private houses often contained “a chest of viols”.  The Viola da gamba in its various sizes was played in domestic concerts or for private musical recreation to explore the expressive possibilities of this plangent instrument.  

Our concert by Golden Wire showcases this rich 17th Century repertory for three Viola da gambas with Organ and Harp, featuring music by Lawes, Jenkins, Ferrabosco, and Campion. 

A Golden Wire has performed widely in New York City – at the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Zuercher Gallery, and with Chatham Baroque and the Elm City Consort.
